Lost in Japan

Writer: kateyfaberkateyfaber

Exactly as it sounds, but much more terrifying. After work today, I needed to return a pocket WiFi by sending it in the mail. I borrowed Lorentz's bike because the only post office that is open past 5 pm is like two miles away. Naturally, I just plugged it into google maps and started on my way. It was around 6 o'clock, so it was already dark here. Within 5 minutes, I already made a wrong turn. So, I backed up and turned around and tried again, and guess what? Stupid google maps was mapping me through this SUPER sketchy forest. I am 97% sure I would not have come out of there alive. There was no lights or pavement, so I was like no way. Not happening. I turned around and started again. I'll spare you some time, just know I made like 4 or 5 wrong turns on the way there because google maps honestly sucks so bad. I didn't make it there until I plugged it into apple maps. So I lock up my bike and realize IT WASN'T THE FREAKING POST OFFICE. So I call Alex in tears, but it's like 4 am in Dayton, so he didn't answer. I tried looking at the map again, realize I stopped to early and still had to ride another 7 or so minutes. Finally, I found the post office and go in already in tears. Guess what? It gets even better. NONE of the workers spoke English, so I'm just standing there crying trying to tell him to send it to this address and I don't care how much it costs. By the grace of God, he sent a Japanese customer who spoke English. He helped me send it and I am so grateful. I paid with a $100.00 bill, I was so distressed. It took me probably 45 minutes to get there, making it just 15 minutes before close. After finally sending my package, I decided to head back. I mapped it, and only got lost one more time. It only took me 15 minutes to get home... if that gives you any idea of how lost I was. On the positive side, I figured out how to use my stove today after about 20 minutes (It's a lot harder than you would think. There are three switches to turn it on and everything is in Japanese..). Anyway, here are some pictures of the deer in Nara to make you smile!

My friend, Nakano, feeding a deer!

This shows how close you can get to the deer in Nara, it's unbelievable.
